Overview

Computers are used in almost all fields of work. To work with a computer, it is essential to understand the computer environment and how data is stored. In this course, you'll explore a number of basic skills that will provide a good foundation for using Mac OS X in your everyday work.

Familiarity with Internet browsing.

Target Student

Any person who is interested in learning the fundamentals needed to work on a Macintosh system. Performance-Based Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

explore some of the simpler aspects of working with the computer, such as starting it up and using the keyboard and mouse. You will also identify the basic functions of the desktop, Finder, and Dock.

examine the file structure on the hard disk and create a personal filing system within the user folder so you can organize your Macintosh system in a way that will help you locate and work with your files more easily.

use Mac OS X’s Finder preferences to customize the look of your work environment. You will also use many of Mac OS X’s system preferences to control a number of system settings that affect your everyday work.

work with Mac OS X and Classic applications and manage multiple open applications. You will also create new documents, format and edit text, and save and print documents.

examine the basics of memory and storage, and how to effectively manage the storage space on your computer.

examine many advanced skills for working with the computer. Using these shortcuts and techniques, you can quickly accomplish many tasks on your computer.

Hardware Requirements

For this course, you will need one computer for each student and one for the instructor. Each computer will need the following minimum hardware components:

PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor. See www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html for a complete list of hardware systems that will run Mac OS X.
At least 128 MB of RAM.
At least 3 GB of available storage space to install the Mac OS X operating system.
A monitor capable of displaying 24-bit color at a resolution of at least 800 x 600 (1024 x 768 or more recommended).
A CD-ROM drive.
A mouse or other pointing device.
An Internet connection.
A printer.
For this course, it is assumed that you are using a keyboard that does not require the use of function key combinations.

Software Requirements

The Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther) operating system.
The Mac OS 9.1 or later (9.2 recommended) operating system.
A Web browser, such as Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape Navigator 4.x, 6.1, 6.2 or 7.0.
