CompTIA Training Overview

You will establish an effective green IT strategy that can help your organization become more energy efficient and environmentally responsible.

CompTIA Training Prerequisites

Working knowledge and hands-on experience with personal computers, client/server network configurations, and computer components, including the ability to install, configure, upgrade, and maintain basic hardware and software components on computers in both desktop/workstation and server roles.

CompTIA Training Audience

This course is intended for information technology (IT) professionals who have decision-making authority for their company's IT infrastructure, who do not have significant prior experience or training in green IT-specific standards, technologies, and practices, and who face the need to establish sound green IT practices in their organization. The student should have mastery of baseline technical concepts such as those presented in standard industry certifications such as CompTIA A+ and Server+, as well as a working understanding of network technology.

CompTIA Training Hardware Requirements

This course is designed for each student and the instructor to have one computer running Microsoft® Windows® 7 Professional. Computers should be capable of running Windows 7 with two virtual machines. The following list describes the minimum system requirements for Windows 7:

  • CPU: 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor.
  • RAM: For 32-bit processors, 1 GB of RAM; for 64-bit processors, 2 GB of RAM. We strongly suggest providing additional RAM to provide acceptable performance when the virtual machines are being accessed.
  • Disk space: 40 GB.
  • Graphics: DirectX 9 device with WDDM 1.0 or higher.
  • A microphone and speakers or a headset.
  • A classroom Internet connection.
In addition, you should provide examples of power-saving hardware for students to examine and possibly use, such as:
  • If you plan to have students complete the lab for Lesson 1, you will need to provide a power meter such as the P3 Kill A Watt™ or the Energy Inc. The Energy Detective™ (TED).
  • Power timers.
  • Smart power strips.
  • Any other power- or material-saving hardware.
CompTIA Training Software Requirements

Each computer requires the following software:
  • Windows 7 Professional with appropriate licenses. This will be installed during initial classroom setup, and it might be used to create an additional virtual machine in the lab for Lesson 2.
  • (Optional) Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 with appropriate licenses. This will be installed on a virtual machine during class, and possibly during the lab for Lesson 2.
  • (Optional) A Linux distribution, such as Debian GNU/Linux, Ubuntu, openSUSE, or CentOS, along with any applicable licenses. Linux may be installed on a virtual machine in the lab for Lesson 2.
  • (Optional) Microsoft® Virtual PC 2007 SP 1 for the CPU types in the classroom, which can be downloaded from www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/support/virtual-pc-2007.aspx and saved on the Desktop. As of the writing of this course, the most current version of Microsoft Virtual PC required that computers have Hardware Assisted Virtualization (HAV) support. To keep hardware requirements to a minimum while providing a rich learning opportunity for students, this course has been designed to use the older version of the software.

  • describe the components that work together in a green infrastructure.
  • describe the various initiatives you can take to make the best of your technologies and reduce power and waste.
  • develop a green IT proposal and justify the cost of the solution.
